Today’s diversified job market offers a plethora of meaningful career options to the student’s. With changes in world economy and globalization, there has been an impetus to newer and newer paths of career choices. But to choose a career for oneself is not as easy as it seem to be. There are instances where students with good academic record and talent ended up with a career not suitable for the type of personality he/she possessed. A subtle yet distinct reason is lack of career guidance and counseling. Every leading and good educational institution today offer career guidance & counseling to the students along with their regular courses of study. Such programmes help the students to know about the type of personality they possess and about the right career to be chosen suiting their personality types. It is through career guidance & counseling programmes that students learn to set their proper aim in life and finally achieve their goal.

The five basic questions generally faced by the students in planning a career include : –

• How to plan a career ?
• How to manage it ?
• How to maintain it ?
• How, to retain it ?
• How to make progress in it ?

All these questions can be answered by a well-designed educational & career counseling programme.

Career counseling is given to students to help them develop career planning and decision making skills, understanding labour market trends and make / implement informed educational & occupational chokes. The career counseling is provided in both individual & group settings. Although the process will vary at times, it generally begins with an identification and exploration of the student’s particular questions and concerns. This stage is often aided through career interest and personality type testing. In some circumstances, the students will have homework assignments to further explore and clarify the issues. This process typically suggests a number of occupational areas to consider further.

Other issues such as low self-esteem or self-confidence, questions of competency, concerns about parental pressure or considerations of the role which students want their career to play in their overall lifestyle and development can also be explored.

School counseling have many responsibility that are sometimes dependent upon specific situations. In general it is the school counselor’s job to provide counseling, consultation & co-ordination of the school system he/she serves. School counselors work closely with administration and teachers to promote a safe school environment & positive learning experience for everyone.
